GAVU – Opus magnum
31. 3.–26. 6. 2022
Curated by Jana Kalousková
The today completely forgotten painter, Jan Křížek (1887–1961), went through academies in Munich, Vienna, and Prague and then worked as an art teacher. His conservatively oriented, stylistically highly variable work was last commemorated via a retrospective exhibition held in Prague in 1959. His inheritance includes an interesting piece, exceptional in its character and large-dimensional format, which is now remembered in a one-work Opus magnum exhibition. It is a loose copy of a Renaissance tapestry from the Belgian Grammont manufactory (housed in the Imperial collections at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna), painted in oil on sheep wool fabric. Křížek created it in 1927 as a kind of prototype for interior decoration, in the spirit of which he probably intended to produce similar ones. To this end, he presented it in 1928 at the Brno exhibition “Contemporary Culture in Czechoslovakia” in the Werkbund pavilion. It, however, apparently did not attract too much attention, since this “business plan” never came to fruition.
