The exhibition follows the history of Czech snowboarding, from its rudiments in socialist Czechoslovakia, when local enthusiasts came forth with the imitations of boards home-made after examples found in foreign magazines, to the 1990s. The latter decade turned snowboarding into a regular sport, which at the same time retained its initial ethos essential for the specific subculture and standpoints. Snowboarding has always been close to the phenomena arriving from the United States, such as surfing and skateboarding. As early as 1978, Luděk Váša showed up with the very first Czech snowboard. In this pioneering era, everything – from the dimensions and construction to materials – had to be solely made after photographs. As soon as the first snowboards imported from the West began to appear, each novelty – especially by the two most famous brands, Jake Burton and Tom Sims – immediately received its Czech copy. The first unofficial snowboarding contest took place at a small ski lift in Pernink in the Ore Mountains in 1984, which in the following year hosted the legendary Unofficial Championship of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.

The dexterous local handymen managed to produce boards comparable in quality with Western production. From 1986, they even seized serial production. The 1987 World Championship in St Moritz and the 1988 European Championship in Avoriaz thus could enjoy the presence of both Czech participants and Czech snowboards. In 1989, this breeding ground bore several new Czech brands; however, there came steamrolling foreign competition in just a few years. With the first specialized shops, the country witnessed the first official half-pipe competition in Pec pod Sněžkou. That is how snowboarding in the Czech Republic slowly became a widespread phenomenon, and for many, a unique lifestyle.
