Shop windows in socialist Czechoslovakia jointly served to promote merchandise and channel local political propaganda and public education, aimed at a healthy lifestyle, thrift, and work ethic. The widely conceived education system trained future professional window dressers at vocational schools, secondary schools of applied arts, art colleges, and universities. Their promotion and advertising practice developed within the network of window-dressing centers of large enterprises, such as Pramen and the Czech Association of Consumer Cooperatives. Even department stores had their sections of this kind, employing numerous staff. Extensive nationwide promotion events ran under the advertising company Merkur, which also realized extensive exhibitions and produced material sought-for by window dressers from all over the country. There also were competitions in thematic window dressing and, from 1969, the window-dressing contest biennale, ARBIEN. The exhibition presents photographs published by the magazine Propagace [Promotion] side by side pictures, sketches, and shop-window models from personal archives of leading window dressers and the archives of the Prague Kotva department store. Its additional dimension is the artistic reflection of window dressing – part of the cycle “Prague Shop Windows” by the Czech-Swiss photographer, Iren Stehli. The Cheb aspect comes in with the photography series by Jaroslav Slavík, capturing the transformations of the local showcases.
