Vojtěch Bartoněk, Going Astray, 1887

GAVU – Opus magnum

30. 9. 2021 – 16. 1. 2022

Curated by Petr Šámal

This oil painting was hitherto unknown to the general public. Experts recently identified it with the work Going Astray, first exhibited in 1887. Its author, Vojtěch Bartoněk (1859 -1908), was one of the leading representatives of the 19th-century genre painting in the Czech lands. The scene takes place in an old-Prague recess with the Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher in Zderaz, probably designed by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. Today, it is one of the few remains of the former monastery complex established by the Knights of the Holy Cross  - Guardians of the Holy Sepulcher, abolished under the Josephine reforms. Bartoněk's canvas thus either intentionally or unintentionally recalls the days when monks inhabited the place.
