Anthroposophy is a spiritual movement founded by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925), whose activities included a number of other fields, as f.e. architecture, sculpture, and design. Today, anthroposophy is generally known primarily as the basis for Waldorf education. In the first half of the century, it resonated strongly in Prague, which Steiner visited twelve times between 1907 and 1924. However, this unique phenomenon did not survive the horrors of the Shoah, the expulsion of Czech Germans, and the subsequent period of Stalinism. Now, a hundred years after the death of its founder, we are commemorating for the first time, through an exhibition and accompanying monograph, the art that was created in Bohemia by an international community of German-Jewish, Czech, Hungarian, and Croatian artists in a surprising range of fields, including fine arts, design, literature, dance, and music. Among the most remarkable artistic achievements by women in the Czech lands are the silk embroideries in the historicist altars by Hilde Pollak-Karlin. During World War I, she and her husband Richard worked in an international colony in Dornach, Switzerland. Three of these altars are now on display in Cheb. Other creators of the Prague school include graphic artist and painter Otty Schneider, graphic artist Joseph Prinke, jeweler Josef Přikryl, and sculptors and designers Bogdan Cerovac and Bohumil Josef Jerie. The latter were behind the so-called „Dornan design from Prague“ in the 1930s and 1940s. The specifics of anthroposophical Prague include an unexpectedly high number of artistically and socially active women and several composers creating anthroposophical compositions.
