This exhibition focuses on the extraordinary personality of the Czech psychiatrist Stanislav Drvota (1929–1992), and his long-standing interest in Czech art. In 1973 the Avicenum publishing house released his book Osobnost a tvorba [Personality and Creativity], the culmination of Drvota’s long-term research into personality types. The very fact that it features authors who were blacklisted at the time and were unable to exhibit or publish their work is surprising in itself. This was possible in that it was a scientific publication and each of the authors appeared only anonymously. Drvota discussed his approach with art historian Jan Kříž, who contributed to the book with a final interpretation of some of the reproduced works. In Osobnost a tvorba, Drvota provided a penetrating insight into the state of Czech art in the 1960s. He later returned to his research with his dissertation at Charles University in 1984, where he worked with the same cohort of artists. The exhibition primarily presents works whose photographs are included in both publications.
