The Political Song Festival in Sokolov, which took place between 1973 and 1988, is something that many people today would rather forget. It was established at the beginning of normalisation, and as such, became a platform openly sympathetic to the post-August policies of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. Although in our country there were other festivals with a similar focus, the FPP became a symbol of the official cultural policy of the period. At the same time, however, it was an important cultural event for an industrial region on the periphery of the country, bringing top performers of local pop music here every year. Surprisingly, its beginnings are linked to another musical genre — the folk festival Porta, one edition of which took place in Sokolov in 1972. For the local union members who organised the festival, the main source of inspiration was the huge festival of the same name in Berlin, with which the Sokolov festival collaborated in securing the participation of left-wing musicians from around the world. After the return of freedom and democracy, the public lost interest in the FPP. (The exception being three editions of the ironically conceived festival in 2009–2011). Retromuseum Cheb and Sokolov Museum are now presenting a series of exhibitions accompanied by a publication, in which they look at the whole phenomenon from a historical perspective. In its title they have included the name of a catchy song that once became the unofficial festival anthem.
