Curator Jan Čejka

Jaroslav Grodl (*1984) established himself as a painter inclined toward recording surrounding events and skeptical of career-building already during his studies at Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts (2003–2009 in the studios of Jiří Sopko and Vladimír Kokolia). After graduation, he therefore returned to his native Highlands region to help develop the local art scene. A path somewhat opposite to what is customary for artists, yet no less responsible, considering the author’s curatorial and pedagogical practice. Following the example of his favorite painters Miloš Jiránek, Jiří Patera, and Petr Veselý (also represented in the exhibition), painting remains the primary means of self-realization for him. The author’s relevance lies not only in his effort to capture the transformation of urban and natural environments, but also in his style, which is characterized by a tendency toward simplicity and vitality of expression. He often uses the principle of repeated recording of the same subject with an effort to capture the atmosphere of the moment. His inclination toward plein air painting is therefore unsurprising. However, this is also complemented by work in small formats and semi-abstract to fully abstract painting. The exhibition primarily reflects both of these extreme positions. And although they are less known from Grodl’s work, it is precisely these that represent his attachment to everyday life and are the essence of many moments that have entered the author’s field of vision.
